Deep in the crypt of St. Catherine's Church lies a hidden gem: the Treasury of St. Catherine. Here you will discover a unique collection of religious masterpieces, with the oldest Anglo-Saxon vestments in Europe, early medieval relics and magnificent silverware as the absolute highlights. Many of these works have been recognised as Flemish Masterpieces because of their exceptional historical, artistic and scientific value.

The crypt has undergone a real transformation over the past year. From 14 September 2025, the treasury will reopen in a completely renovated setting, with modern multimedia and interactive experiences!

What makes the collection so special?

The Codex Eyckensis is Belgium's oldest illuminated manuscript. Please note: the Codex is temporarily housed in the Maurits Sabbe Library (KU Leuven) for international research.
The Anglo-Saxon fabrics are among the oldest preserved religious vestments in Europe.
Medieval manuscripts & relics: mysterious and fascinating, but above all rare and unique.
Masterpieces by Frederik Malders (1593-1662) and Henri Flémal (1624-1686), magnificent craftsmanship down to the smallest details.
The reliquaries of Harlindis and Relindis: (im)material heritage with a rich history.

Following extensive renovation, the treasure chamber is now more beautiful, more organised and has more stories to tell than ever before. The new presentation showcases the objects in a fresh, contemporary setting: with atmospheric lighting, clear explanations and interactive elements that invite young and old alike to look, learn and marvel.
