The gem of the romano-gothic architecture has a particularly rich history

The sisters Harlindis and Relindis built a wooden church here as early as the 8th century. The roman nave with wooden ceiling, the gothic choir, the 14th-century murals and the ‘stick stone’. There’s so much history to explore.

There are so many miracles and legends relating to Aldeneik.
Book a town guide for a group visit or by the Maaseik-Aldeneik cultural brochure and go exploring yourself.

Did you know : There’s a legend about the Leugenbrugje in Aldeneik. One day, Harlindis and Relindis went to collect stones to be used for a floral mosaic in the church. Fearful of the reaction of their father Adelhart, they hid the stones in their aprons. When Adelhart asked them what they were hiding, they timidly answered: ‘Flowers’. And would you believe it, when they opened their aprons they saw that they were filled with roses!

From 1 May to 30 September, you can view the interior of the church from the door Wednesday to Sunday between 9.00 and 17.00.
