Maaseik was founded in the Middle Ages on the site where Aldeneik now stands. Harlindis and Relindis, popular saints from the 8th century, are, as it were, the foundations of our town and present-day society by the construction of their church in Aldeneik. It is therefore a centuries-old tradition in Maaseik to celebrate these two saints every 25 years. The origin of the Harlindis and Relindis Ommegang is the transfer of the relics from the crypt of the Sint-Catharina Church in Maaseik to the Sint-Anna Church in Aldeneik and back. In 2022 it will be more, much more than just an Ommegang.
It will be a feast that inspires all generations, cultures and religions. A feast that encourages connection, sustainability and creation.
